The Only Fully Augmented Reality Glasses?
meta 1 Developer Kit
While we are all playing around with the dev kit of the Oculus Rift, there is possibly a new one on its way soon:
More on glasses and humanoid Minority report interaction is tried out by the meta1 guys. Their project has the statement “meta 1 Dev Kit – the first device allowing visualization and interaction with 3D virtual objects in the real world using your hands.” plus: “The Only Fully Augmented Reality Glasses.”
Their team is backed up by well-known researches and industry people from the field (e.g. even Steve Mann as Chief Scientist of Meta, well known for his EyeTap device). They now try to raise money through kickstarter to bring their idea of an AR glass to live. So, be sure to check out their nicely done fund-raiser concept video and check the project:
Let’s get some further players on the AR glasses market! (… and maybe even not connected to the cloud by default. :-))
A short video shows the depth map interaction for gestures from their lab. The stereo camera and screens are supposed to give a good optical see-through image (960×540 pixel per eye, 23° fov) for an mixed reality experience. A first prototype has a tentative shipping date – aimed for September 2013…
In other areas of the web…
Happy Russian welders get AR training. A good concept, since the welding shield can be easily augmented, by replacing the small window by a screen… I like the positive marketing music, though I don’t speak enough Russian to understand if this is going to be the future or not. :-)
Frequently, there are updates on contact lens technology including some sort of wires, semiconductors or such. We are still too far away to really proclaim a google glass-like technology without the glasses, but TechnologyReview sums up nicely the current status of the bio lab of the UNIST.
So much for today!
