Playtime with Disney and X-Rays

Augmented Reality with haptic feedback

A small detour from visual augmented reality towards the holistic AR including more senses! Disney develops a new technology to alter our touch sense and to simulate tactile feedback for virtual information. Their research project “REVEL” („Reverse Electrovibration”) demands a small user-worn device, that creates a measurable electrostatic field, allowing an artificially created tactile sensation for the user. It injects a weak electrical signal into the body and lets us experience projected or otherwise augmented information better. Best just watch it!

AR X-Rays on tablets

A cool demo was created for a Volvo show, showing a fun-to-use-and-watch presentation of a full-size car augmentation. I like the x-ray view through the ipads, though you have to switch off the annoying marketing voice. Sorry. :-)

Mixed News from AR people

Matthew Mather has completed his Atopia Chronicles. If you didn’t get around to read it, watch out for the full collection, nicely commented by Hugh Howey of the NY Times: “So great, I wish I’d come up with it myself, the Atopia series is one of those that will stick with me for the rest of my life.” :-)

Mark Skwarek is in another museum show, asking “whats wrong in your community” and wants you to participate. The show will hapen at the Nikolaj, Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center in Copenhagen, Denmark, Aug 25th. If you want to be in the show and make your voice heard, check out his page.

A fun light installation comes from Michal Kohut (see image), connecting our environment with the blinking of our eyes. Kind of power-saving diminished reality. ;-) I just liked the idea! Have a nice weekend!
